BALLISTIC
MODIFIERS |
 |
The use of combinations of Lead and Copper Salts as Ballistic Modifiers in double-base propellant has been known for many years. Ballistic Modifiers usually affect the propellant burning rate, impart plateau or mesa burning characteristics to the propellant at certain pressures, and reduce the sensitivity of the propellant to temperature.
A new generation of chemically stable Ballistic Modifiers has been developed for the Nitrocellulose based rocket propellants . These modifiers are chelate type compounds containing Lead, Copper and aromatic organic liagands such as Salicylic and Beta Resorcylic Acids.
The purpose of this development was to improve the ballistic performance of the propellant and to overcome the problems associated with conventional Ballistic Modifiers. These new Lead/Copper (LC) compounds when used in rocket propellant have proven to produce a better storage stability, ballistic reproduceabilty, burning and aging characteristics and propellant insensitivity-range to temperature.
Island Pyrochemical Industries offers a wide range of Lead/ Copper Compounds; these new compounds are hereby listed in a descending order of their affect on the burning rate.
LC-12-0
LC-12-5
LC-12-6
LC-12-7
LC-12-10
LC-12-15
LC-12-20
Island Pyrochemical Industries can also supply materials to clients who use the conventional type of Ballistic Modifiers such as:
LEAD SALICYLATE
LEAD 2- ETHYL HEXOATE
LEAD BETA RESORCYLATE
COPPER BETA RESORCYLATE, MONOBASIC
COPPER SALICYLATE
We are constantly researching these products, with consequent improvements in their performance. One of our latest developments is an already mixed compound of Lead Salicylate/Lead 2-Ethyl Hexoate in a powder form. This new compound which eliminates the need for a complicated two-step mixing process of the two ingredients, provides a better dispersion throughout the propellant mix, easier handling and ensures a more stabilized and controlled burning.
We are very interested in hearing from you, regarding your Ballistic Modifier requirements. We would be happy to assist you in choosing the right Ballistic Modifier for your company’s needs, which will ensure an improved ballistic performance.
