ISLAND PYROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES (IPI) is a well known supplier of explosives and explosive additives, such as binders, plasticizers and chemical markers.
IPI is a qualified supplier to U.S. Government Arsenals and many U.S. ordnance manufacturers.
Explosive and Propellant Additives offered by IPI include:
Specification MIL-P-13298A (MU). Used as a binder in explosive compositions. The binder makes the explosive less shock sensitive so it can withstand higher temperatures and it can be jostled without reacting. With the binder, the explosive is easier to handle and easier to mold. In the C-4 Explosive, RDX is combined with polyisobutylene as the plastic binder.
Marking agents are currently required by law to be used in plastic explosives. DMDNB is a high vapor pressure compound that when added to a plastic explosive will significantly increase the detection probability of that explosive.
Specification MIL-D-10692. Used as a plasticizer in explosive compositions. The plasticizer makes the explosive material malleable.
Specifications WS-20883; MIL-T-82825; MIL-T-70681. Bonding and accelarating agent of plastic bonded explosives and of composite propellants.
Specification DOD-D-23443B. Used as a plasticizer in plastic bonded explosives.
Specification MIL-C-51077 (Ord.) Used in explosive compositions containing Trinitrotoluene (TNT) (to prevent exudation of TNT).
