WHITE PHOSPHORUS

White Phosphorus is produced from naturally occurring phosphate rocks. In military applications, white phosphorus is used in munitions such as mortars, artillery shells, and grenades.

When munitions containing white phosphorus are fired in the field, they burn and produce smoke which contains both unburned phosphorus and burned phosphorus products. This smoke screen is used to protect potential targets and to conceal movement of personnel and material.

Because of its high reactivity with oxygen in air, white phosphorus is always supplied in steel drums under water, and it should be loaded into projectiles under water.

IPI supplies white phosphorus in accordance with MIL-W-215D. Our standard packaging is 250-kg drums containing 200-kg of white phosphorus and about 50-kg of water.
