STABILIZING RODS

Back to Ordnance Products

Stabilizing Rods in rocket motors were first introduced in the early 1950’s for the sole purpose of improving the internal oscillatory combustion of the mesa burning propellant. The introduction of Stabilizing Rods generated a very uniform burning in the propellant grain at a certain range of temperature, however some rough burning and occasional “High Pressure Spikes”, which exceeded the safe limits of the metal motor tube, were seen at colder and hotter temperatures.

A new generation of improved Stabilizing Rods, coated with a Ballistic Modifier, corrected these serious problems and widened the temperature insensitivity range of the mesa and plateau type propellant. In addition, the presence of such Ballistic Modifiers suppressed the initial flame plume at the time of ignition, thus providing a safer environment to the personnel and equipment involved.

Island Ordnance Systems has been involved in the development and manufacture of various types of Stabilizing Rods and special types of Ballistic Modifier coatings for many years. These plastic binded coatings vary in shape and size and in their different chemical composition in order to meet the various types of ballistic requirement and burning performance required in many different propellant grains. Our specially coated Stabilizing Rods, when incorporated into rocket motors, provide a more uniform and stable burning and a wider range of temperature sensitivity.
